Privacy policy
Last updated: 10 September 2026
This policy explains how Crilly Books collects, uses and protects your personal information when you visit our website, join our mailing list or contact us.
Who we are
Crilly Books is the controller of the personal information covered by this policy. If you have a privacy question or want to exercise your rights, email hello@crillybooks.com.
Information we collect
We may collect:
- your first name, last name, email address and whether you identify as a parent or caregiver, teacher, bookseller, librarian or other audience when you join our mailing list or request an activity pack;
- your choice about whether you would also like to receive occasional marketing emails;
- information you choose to include when you email us or make an enquiry; and
- limited technical information, such as device, browser, IP address and server-log information, where this is processed to deliver, secure and maintain the website.
When you submit one of our forms, the details you enter are sent directly to Sender, our email-list and email-delivery provider. Your email application will not be opened.
How and why we use your information
We use mailing-list details to send occasional news about Crilly Books new releases, offers and activities. Our lawful basis is your consent, which you give when you join the list or choose the marketing option on the activity-pack form.
If you request an activity pack without choosing marketing emails, we use your details only to provide the pack and administer that request. We keep this preference separate from the Crilly Books mailing list.
We use enquiry information to reply to you and manage our relationship with readers, schools, booksellers, libraries, event organisers and other contacts. We do this where it is necessary for our legitimate interests in running Crilly Books and responding to enquiries, or to take steps at your request before entering into a contract.
We may also use information where necessary to comply with a legal obligation or to establish, exercise or defend legal claims. We do not use your information for automated decision-making that has legal or similarly significant effects.
Email news and withdrawing consent
You can withdraw your consent or object to direct marketing at any time. Use the unsubscribe option in an email or contact hello@crillybooks.com. We will stop sending marketing messages as soon as reasonably possible.
Your right to object to direct marketing is absolute. We may keep a minimal suppression record so that we can respect your request and avoid contacting you again.
Sharing and international processing
We do not sell your personal information. We use Sender to store form submissions, organise mailing preferences and deliver emails, and may share information with other service providers that help us host and secure the website or provide professional support. We may also disclose information where the law requires it. These providers may process information outside the UK. Where they do, we require an appropriate lawful transfer mechanism and safeguards.
How long we keep information
We keep mailing-list information while you remain subscribed. We keep activity-pack request information only as long as reasonably necessary to deliver the pack, administer the request and respect the preference you selected. If you unsubscribe, we delete or anonymise information that is no longer needed, while retaining only what is reasonably necessary to record your preference, demonstrate compliance or meet legal requirements.
We keep enquiry correspondence only for as long as it is reasonably needed to deal with the enquiry and any related relationship, normally no longer than 24 months after the matter is closed unless a longer period is required for legal, accounting or safeguarding reasons.
Your rights
Depending on the circumstances, you may have the right to ask us for access to your information, correct it, delete it, restrict its use, object to its use or receive a portable copy. Where we rely on consent, you can withdraw it at any time without affecting earlier lawful use.
Email hello@crillybooks.com to make a request. We may need to confirm your identity before responding.
Children’s information
Our books and activities are created for children, but our mailing list and contact forms are intended for adults. We do not knowingly ask children to provide personal information. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, please contact us so we can deal with it appropriately.
Analytics and cookies
If you choose “Accept analytics”, we use Google Analytics to understand visits, page views, general traffic sources and actions such as newsletter sign-ups, activity-pack requests and use of the book preview. Google may process technical information including device and browser details, an approximate location derived from your IP address, and referring or campaign information. We do not send your name or email address to Google Analytics.
Google Analytics is not loaded unless you accept it. You can reject analytics and still use the whole website. You can change your choice at any time using “Cookie settings” in the footer.
Security and website technologies
We take reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect personal information. Our website and hosting providers may use strictly necessary technologies and server logs to operate, secure and troubleshoot the site. We do not use mailing-list information for behavioural advertising.
Complaints
Please contact us first so we can try to resolve your concern. You also have the right to complain to the UK Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk or by calling 0303 123 1113.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy when our website, mailing-list arrangements or legal obligations change. We will publish the revised version here and update the date above. If a change materially affects how we use information already collected, we will take reasonable steps to bring it to your attention.
